Advertising Policy

Advertising pays for the reporting. It does not buy influence over it. This page sets out exactly where the line sits.

How The Charter is funded

The site is supported by display advertising and, where a link earns a commission, affiliate links. If a page contains an affiliate link, that is disclosed near the link or at the top of the article.

The separation

  • Advertisers never see editorial work before publication.
  • No advertiser can approve, reject, delay or alter a story.
  • Commercial pressure is not a reason to publish or to drop a piece.
  • Editorial staff do not write advertising copy, and commercial staff do not write editorial.

Sponsored content

Sponsored articles and paid placements are labelled Sponsored at the top of the page and in listings. They are written or commissioned by our commercial team, they live in a visually distinct format, and they are never presented as news reporting. Health claims in sponsored content are held to the same evidence standard as editorial.

Ad quality

We do not accept advertising for products that make false or unproven medical claims, for prescription medicines aimed at the general public, or for anything that targets readers by a health condition they have not chosen to share. If you see an ad on this site that breaks that rule, tell us through the contact page and we will have it removed.

Advertising enquiries

Write to us with “Advertising” in the subject line via the contact page. We will send rates, formats and audience data.
