Anti-sunscreen trend promoted by influencers worries dermatologists

While the sun is known to be good for health, it is important to protect oneself with good sunscreen. However, anti-sunscreen influencers are questioning their effectiveness, claiming no longer to want to apply them in videos viewed by thousands of young people and broadcast mainly in Spain and the United States with the hashtag #antisunscreen.

This anti-sunscreen trend is worrying dermatologists. Catherine Braeken, a dermatologist and head of department at the CHR Namur, explains that “all products are tested before being marketed, and all products that could be endocrine disruptors are removed from the formulas”. For the dermatologist, influencers say anything and put people’s health at risk.

She also points out that we are exposed to the sun much more than before, that the number of skin cancers is constantly increasing and that it is therefore essential to protect yourself properly.

The cancer foundation estimates that in Belgium, one in five Belgians will have or have skin cancer before the age of seventy-five. A cancer that can nevertheless be avoided by protecting oneself properly.

Additional points:

  • The anti-sunscreen trend is gaining momentum on social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram.
  • Influencers are making unfounded claims about the dangers of sunscreen, such as that it causes cancer or vitamin D deficiency.
  • Dermatologists warn that these claims are false and could have serious consequences for people’s health.
  • They urge people to continue using sunscreen to protect themselves from the sun’s harmful rays.

I hope this is helpful! Let me know if you have any other questions.
